AIM London Careers Workshops
Students in Years 10 to 13 recently took part in an informative and highly engaging careers session delivered by an external speaker from the AIM London organisation. The session focused on apprenticeships and T Levels as alternative and complementary pathways to further education and employment.
The session was designed to broaden students’ understanding of post-16 and post-18 options beyond traditional academic routes. The speaker provided a clear overview of the wide range of apprenticeships and T Level courses currently available, highlighting opportunities across key industries including engineering, digital technologies, health and social care, business, construction, and education.
Throughout the presentation, students were introduced to the structure and expectations of both pathways. Apprenticeships were outlined as paid employment opportunities that combine practical work experience with structured training, leading to nationally recognised qualifications. T Levels were described as rigorous technical courses equivalent to three A levels, offering classroom-based learning alongside substantial industry placements with employers.
There was a high level of student engagement throughout the session. Students asked thoughtful and insightful questions, demonstrating strong interest in how these routes align with their career aspirations. Particular focus was placed on entry requirements, application processes, and how apprenticeships and T Levels compare with A levels and university pathways.
The speaker also provided valuable guidance on “flightpaths” into the job market, explaining how students can progress from GCSEs into T Levels or apprenticeships, and from there into skilled employment, higher apprenticeships, or degree-level study. Clear emphasis was placed on the importance of developing employability skills, gaining relevant experience, and achieving the required qualifications in English and mathematics.
The workshops also went through interview techniques and gave the students the opportunity to practice the techniques they had learnt. The workshops have been well received by our learners with lots of inquisitive questions being asked. All students participated well in the group activities and presented their responses very well.
The session was highly valuable in empowering students to make informed decisions about their futures. It reinforced the message that there are multiple successful routes into employment and professional careers, each offering different benefits depending on individual strengths, interests, and ambitions.
Some of our learners stayed behind afterwards to sit and talk with the presenter and ask about individual career pathways and the presenter shared how our students had been brilliant ambassadors for the school and shown excellent engagement.
