Transition

When the time comes for students to move on from Nightingale Community Academy to further education or employment, we hope to make the transition process as smooth as possible and provide information, advice and guidance throughout.

Nightingale Community Academy (NCA) 6th Form was set up to support students in making the transition to mainstream education, employment or training.

At the start of the process our NCA 6th Form team works with students, parents/carers and the wider teaching team to identify suitable progression routes and a personalised plan for achieving any required accreditation. In reality this work often begins in Year 10 or 11 when students are supported to visit and make applications to a range of local post-16 providers.

For some, the NCA 6th Form experience is predominantly delivered on-site with a focus on improving basic skills and achieving passport accreditation in numeracy and literacy. We offer a range of vocational study opportunities (e.g. Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Painting & Decorating and barbering) and we provide access to a carefully constructed curriculum that includes personal & social development, employability skills, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and electronic media. The NCA 6th Form Offer aims to provide the core skills that will enable students to confidently access mainstream opportunities in Year 13.

For other students the NCA 6th Form experience will largely be delivered off-site; accessing college courses or work related learning. In these cases the NCA 6th Form works with post-16 education and training providers to enable smooth transitions. There is also the opportunity to access additional learning at the school. This could be social and emotional or therapeutic in nature, or it may simply be a catch-up curriculum, personalised to deliver core skills.

In addition, the 6th Form aims to offer a broad programme of work experience that will enable our students to have meaningful and relevant experiences with local businesses. They will be given opportunities to develop skills and make informed decisions about next steps in environments that are both professional and life enriching.
